In a vibrant celebration of culture and shared heritage, the Igbo Community of South Australia opened its doors and its hearts, inviting the South Australian Caribbean Community to the annual New Yam Festival (Iri Ji) one October 5.

The event, held at a Goodwood Community Centre in Adelaide, was a colourful fusion of music, dance, and tradition.

The highlight was the ceremonial tasting of the first harvested yam, a sacred Igbo tradition symbolising gratitude and the promise of a new beginning.

Among the nations listed are Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad & Tobago, alongside other Commonwealth cousins. For the West Indian diaspora, the bridge reflects more than just the physical journey across the ocean. It mirrors our specific path: leaving the vibrant, rhythmic homelands of the Caribbean to weave our unique identity into the multicultural landscape of Australia.
